Spring Awakening

spring awakenings

It’s finally spring in New York City! The Cherry Blossoms are popping and the tulips are lining Park Ave once again. The arrival of spring beckons to us to leap forward and shed unnecessary layers – literally and figuratively! There is suddenly more light to our days, and we once again bear witness to the earth blossoming, opening, and beginning again with a fresh start.

The change of seasons can also give us an opportunity for a fresh start. It’s a time to brush off the old, relinquish the past and embrace the newness and nowness of what’s in front of us. As I spring clean our home and change over closets, putting away sweaters and boots, I also carve out a bit of time to tend to the garden of my mind. When I see a few weeds in my garden that I can pull out, I plant what I wish to see flourish and nourish my daily intention with breath. Perhaps most importantly I try to forgive myself for my shortcomings, and insert positive counter remarks when I hear my inner critic speak harshly. The choice is and always will be ours and ours alone to watch ourselves in a way that fosters our growth, happiness and fulfillment.

At every single moment of our lives we have the opportunity to expand into more or retract into less. When we take the time to be with ourselves, be it through yoga, meditation, working on a particular craft or hobby that calms our mind, or spending time outside, we are more able to accurately see ourselves as an observer. To assess ourselves without judgement and inquire if our current mindset is serving our wellbeing.

Today will become a memory, tomorrow is still a mystery. May I stay rooted in the present and enjoy the Earth awakening again!

Happy Spring!
