Basic Principles in Iyengar Yoga

1) The technicalities of structural alignment

    • Muscular dynamics of contraction, extension and expansion

appiied to optimal alignment of the skeleton.

    • Organ dynamics of spreading (creating space for increased

circulation in an organ), soaking (providing time for an area

to bathe in and be nourished by fresh blood) and squeezing

(removing used blood and fluid by pressure)

    2) Poses are modified to provide

      • Traction (nerve, disk or joint compression)
      • Support (inflammation, fatigue)

    3) Conditions identified and treated

      • Acute
      • Rehabilitative, re-education
      • Maintenance

    4) Sequencing designed for particular conditions

      • Sequence tailored; passive supported, dynamic supported

(isometric internal or external), repetitions of asanas

      • Instructions tailored to reinforce the desired effect
