“Malas are important tools of both worship and healing. When we use a mala with our mantra recitation, the power of the mantra enters into the beads of the mala, which become energized at a subtle level. The more often we use them, the greater their power becomes. The mala gathers and magnifies the power of the mantra forming a sphere of energy and protection around us.” ~ David Frawley
Why Use a Mala:
Malas have become a popular tool in the yoga world these days. The reason is not just because they are beautiful to wear, but because they really work! Malas (sometimes called malabeads or prayer beads) can have a very powerful effect on the mind, body, and spirit. They help increase ones focus and concentration. They activate a healing response by lowering heart rate and reducing blood pressure. Using these tools helps to reduce stress and balance one’s emotions. Malas help bring in wisdom and depth. Depending on what stone you use can also have an affect. Wood beads usually have a grounding quality, diamond cut beads can amplify the energetic property of the crystal, and even mixing and matching the gems can create different energies. Whatever you choose, it’s a powerful tool to help your meditation practice. Find out more from Alyson Atma Simms at www.atmasofferings.com.
How to Pick out a Mala:
“How do I pick out my mala?” As the owner of Atma’s Offerings, I get this question a lot. When teaching How to Make Malas, we always discuss this important topic, along with other major points around malas (when it breaks, why 108 beads, how to use it…) I can tell you to use muscle testing to choose, run your hand over a few if they are on a table and sense which one is it, or google every stone ever written about to see what you are needing. I can give you all sorts of other tips to choose your mala, including using our Vedic astrologer to look at your chart and give you a prescription!
And / But the easiest and best way is this: It is the one you keep being drawn to. When looking at the malas online or in person, it is the one you keep going back to and looking at. It’s really just that simple. If you are reading this newsletter, at one of the yoga festivals with us, taking yoga, doing meditation or any sort of self-inquiry, you have “enough” intuition to decide for yourself. Your intuition has been developed enough to know what is right for you.
Alyson Atma Simms, E-RYT 500, is a natural bridge between the earthly and divine realms. Her teaching style brings an intensity of spirit, while enveloping you in grace and humor. She was drawn to her first yoga class in 2001 and her life became one of devotion. With a degree in Art Education and a long time interest in gems and jewelry making, it only seemed natural to bring these into her love of yoga. Her teachings in Hatha, Kundalini, & Meditation have led her around the world to teach.
