To paraphrase Judith Lasater: “The yoga mat has become a place of challenge”. While that challenge is not necessarily a bad thing, it can sometimes overwhelm the more quiet aspects of the asana practice. Due to this tendency, understanding the restorative practice is perhaps an essential part of any modern yogis study. It is especially important as a teacher to have a basic understanding for the technique and physiology behind restoratives and relaxation in general.

This week will be devoted to discussing and discovering what it means to be supported in our yoga practice. We will then apply these insights to the foundational/typical restorative postures as well as consider how to modify these forms based on a students needs. As a bonus we will also spend a TON of time relaxing on all of the props!

What to bring: yoga mat, notebook, and eye covering.

About Ryan:

Ryan Cunningham (they/them) is a Boston-based yoga practitioner. Their practice arises from the view that yoga is both an experience of, and a path towards cultivating wellness. For Ryan, this involves an daily practice of breathing, meditation, contemplation and movement.

Ryan has been influenced primarily by two Boston area teachers — Barbara Benagh and Tom Alden. They spent many years attending Barbara's weekly teachers' class as well as her course entitled "The Art of Teaching". Over the past 4 years, Ryan has studied primarily with Tom Alden D.C. in a one-on-one mentorship format, specifically focusing on dharma, biomechanics and yoga therapy. They also have studied with and been influenced by Judith Lasater, Leslie Kaminoff and Ethan Nichtern.

In 2008, Ryan began teaching group and private yoga classes. While much has evolved over the past decade, Ryan's primary focus has been teaching students the skills and understanding that enables them to practice for themselves. In 2016, Ryan became the owner of Bow Street Yoga in Somerville, MA where they teach group classes, a year long yoga studies course, and a mentorship program for teachers and students. They also are on faculty at Berklee College of Music and host and produce two podcasts on the topic of yoga — "Unrolled" with co-host Kate Robinson and "Just Yoga".
