What Are We Really Doing When We Say Open The Hips, and Is That What We Really Want?
by
Julie Dohrman
What Are We Really Doing When We Say Open The Hips, and Is That What We Really Want? with Julie Dohrman Saturday February 23 || 12-2pm $55 || $50 before February 16 “Hip Openers” has become a catch-phrase to describe yoga poses that increase range of motion in the hip joint. But do you really just need a more mobile hip joint for everything? While it’s true for some that increased external rotation will relieve stiffness in the lumbar spine, aid in overall extension, and enable access to more challenging poses, it’s also true that over lengthened hamstrings, hip flexor, and external rotator muscles can weaken stability. So what’s a practitioner to do? Since the hip joint is supported by muscles on all sides: the quads, hamstrings, adductors, glutes, and deep rotators, increasing and stabilizing the range of motion in the hip joint involves an intelligent and comprehensive approach. In our 2 hour workshop we’ll lay out a map of the hip, target each section, and practice basic-to-intermediate "hip opener" poses. Learning to balance the use of all muscle groups while honoring the natural structure of your body will enhance your practice for years to come. In our time together you’ll learn:- Basic anatomy of the hip, and muscle groups that support healthy ROM
- Targeted poses and actions that balance stability and flexibility
- How to recognize your structural limits, and proclivities for movement
- How to practice poses safely, deeply, and even therapeutically
About Julie Julie Dohrman is ERYT-500 and has been teaching yoga locally and internationally for 17 years. One of New York and Brooklyn's most sought after teachers, she is widely known for an inspiring, intelligent, and practical approach to yoga. Classes are informed from deep studies of Tantra lineages, asana, meditation, and anatomy / biomechanics. With an infectious passion for the practice, Julie views yoga as a means of personal transformation and growth. A Weekend with Leslie Kaminoff
by
Leslie Kaminoff
A Weekend with Leslie Kaminoff March 2-3, 2019 Saturday & Sunday | 9:30am-5pm* $349 Full | $299 by Dec 2 Single Day $199** YogaWorks Soho
459 Broadway 2nd floor New York, NY 10013 212.965.0801
Leslie Kaminoff is a yoga educator inspired by the tradition of T.K.V. Desikachar. He is recognized internationally as a specialist in the fields of yoga, breath anatomy and bodywork. For four decades he has led workshops and developed specialized education for many leading yoga associations, schools and training programs in America and throughout the world.
SATURDAY Reimagining Alignment, Part 1 (Morning) This highly interactive workshop will promote an experimental, experiential atmosphere of inquiry regarding the teaching of alignment, safety and effective cueing of asana. Starting with an historical and anatomical perspective on the subject and a functional definition of alignment, we will explore how human uniqueness requires us to understand that “asanas don’t have alignment – people have alignment.”
Afternoon Re-imagining Alignment, Part 2 (Afternoon) Building on clear, simple principles that govern healthy musculoskeletal function, Leslie will explain why many common alignment cues like “tuck your tail,” “lengthen your spine,” “square your hips” may be doing more harm than good. Working closely with class participants, he will suggest what kind of language and concepts may be used instead.
SUNDAY Healthy Spines: Range of Motion, Support and Breath (Morning) If spinal alignment cues do not produce evenly distributed movement, repeated practice may result in a perpetuation of chronic tightness in the very areas we seek to release. This workshop will provide a solid grounding in the details of spinal range of motion from both an anatomical and a yogic perspective, and suggest practical, breath-based movements for healthy alignment strategies.
Forward-Bending: Stretching the West (Afternoon) In Sanskrit, the back of the body is referred to as “Paschima,” meaning “West” – therefore Paschima Uttanasana, or Paschimottanasana, is the practice of elongating the posterior line of the body. This workshop will delve into the myofascial and functional anatomy of the “superficial back line,” and review strategies for more effective and pain-free practice of deep forward folds.
*There is a lunch break each day, 12:30-2pm **Priority given to students registering for the full weekend. Single Day purchase will be available 6-8 weeks prior.
Leslie's approach to teaching combines intellectual rigor, spontaneity and humor, and is always evolving. In addition to teaching, he is the founder of The Breathing Project, a New York City based educational non-profit dedicated to advancing educational standards for yoga teachers and other movement professionals. His unique year-long course, once available only at his home studio, is now available online at yogaanatomy.net.
