Birgitte Kristen and Olivia Barry are looking forward to teaching another 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training together! Birgitte’s and Olivia’s unique teaching approach combines decades of experience in yoga asana, meditation, and the art of teaching yoga. Both trainers like to slow down and deconstruct the experience of a yoga class so that you can both deepen your own practice and learn the nuts and bolts of how to teach the practice of yoga to others.

Since 1990, YogaWorks has been a leader in yoga education, and our celebrated alumni have gone on to become some of the world’s most renowned yoga teachers. The YogaWorks Yoga Teacher Training program blends yoga traditions from the east and west, integrating both into a practical and unique method that combines vinyasa flow with an emphasis on alignment and skillful sequencing. Our mission is to provide each student with the necessary foundation to skillfully teach yoga with compassion, safety and integrity, while honoring his or her individual voice and style. Whether you join us to become a yoga teacher or simply to deepen your own yoga practice, the YogaWorks yoga teacher training will uniquely prepare you to leave your mark on the world.

GET TO KNOW THE TRAINERS

Birgitte Kristen

With a YogaWorks 500-hour certification and over 21 years of professional instruction, Birgitte leads trainings at the YogaWorks Santa Monica Teacher Training Center every year. She grew up in Denmark, and at the age of 19 was given the opportunity to move to Los Angeles, where she began studying psychology, massage therapy, meditation, and yoga. Beginning in her teens, Birgitte has struggled with anxiety, OCD, and an eating disorder, so she had plenty to work with and plenty to learn from. As she dove into a more serious yoga practice, she experienced yoga’s healing aspects and yoga’s ability to help center and find clarity.

Yoga has prepared Birgitte and supported her through the challenges of living in a new country, raising her kids, dealing with her mother’s tragic death, and understanding and managing her anxiety. It is a way for Birgitte to connect with the deepest part of herself, and in turn enables her to see how we are all interconnected. She believes that in many ways, yoga is about clearing any obstructions that separate us from who we innately are so that we can experience wholeness. Birgitte believes it is a beautiful and profound practice that can benefit people of all ages. She is grateful to have such a healing modality, and to be able to share it with thousands of students, who sincerely have been her greatest teachers. Olivia Barry

Olivia Barry, PT, has been teaching at YogaWorks since 2004. She combines Physical Therapy with classical yoga to create classes that cultivate alignment and healing. Olivia is the author of the YogaWorks Teacher Trainer Anatomy Manual, a Senior Anatomy Teacher in the YogaWorks teacher training program, and a Trainer in the YogaWorks Teacher Trainings at the 200 and 300 hour levels. Olivia has completed teacher trainings at YogaWorks, the Iyengar Institute of Los Angeles, and Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County. She is also in a private practice specializing in orthopedic injury prevention and rehabilitation at the Akasha Center for Integrative Medicine. Her educational background includes a B.A. from UC Berkeley and a Masters in Physical Therapy from California State University at Northridge. Olivia’s inspirations include BKS Iyengar; Jack Kornfield and Insight Meditation; Mooji; Rishikesh, India, the birthplace of yoga; Kyoto, Japan, home of ancient Buddhist temples; and life itself. Her own yoga practice is like a dear friend — it cheers her up when she’s sad, it reminds her when she’s out of line, and it gently challenges her to be a better person. Olivia teaches yoga because she is frequently awestruck by the power of yoga to bring relief and joy. Teaching this empowering healing art to others is one of Olivia’s most rewarding experiences in life. Learn more about Olivia Barry at oliviabarryptyoga.com.
